Review: Wall-E

Warning: Content may contain spoilers.

wall-e logo

WALL-E, a computer-animated sci-fi film produced by Pixar, is a story of a waste disposal robot named WALL-E, abbreviation for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class, or Wallie, given by myself, who is created to clean up the polluted Earth. He falls in love with another robot named EVE and follows her into space on an adventure.

Reminder: If you haven't watched WALL-E and you don't want to spoil your WALL-E movie outing, read no further. Feel free to read the other posts.

The movie started with Wallie collecting items that he finds interesting among the trash, takes spare parts for himself from other malfunctioned WALL-E units and frequently watches a video of a dance and a couple singing while they hold hands. By watching the video, he learns emotions and feelings which emphasized more on love.

Wallie was all lonely, except that he had an indestructible pet cockroach. Every time Wallie rolls over it, it gets crushed but immediately pops back into its normal form. Weird huh?

During one of his daily routine, Wallie discovered a seedling plant and he replanted it in an old shoe. Shortly after that, a spaceship landed on Earth and deployed EVE, short form for Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator.

EVE is a female robot sent to Earth on a mission: to search for living plants. Well, Wallie eventually fell in love with her on first sight. He was too desperate, maybe.

EVE initially showed extreme violence by blasting her plasma cannon at anything which she perceived as harmful but Wallie managed to gain her trust after he saved her from a storm. Inside Wallie's home, he decided to show her the plant he found. Unfortunately, once EVE saw the plant, she stores it inside herself and deactivates. EVE was motionless after that and Wallie stayed beside her all the time.

Later on, the spaceship that delivered EVE returned and retrieved her. Wallie was too in love to let her go therefore he clung onto the ship as it took off to space. The spaceship then took them to Axiom, a huge spaceship where humans from Earth are currently living in.

Onboard the Axiom, electronic hovering long chairs transport the big fat humans wherever they go while they talk non-stop with their friends on a screen projected in front of their face. The humans have lost huge bone mass, causing them too obese to stand or move without robotic assistance.

Upon meeting the captain of the spaceship, Captain McCrea, EVE wanted to present the plant but it went missing. The plant was the only item to direct the spaceship back to Earth. But it seemed that Auto, Axiom's internal autopilot, didn't agree with the idea of going back to Earth as it tried to get rid of the plant.

But in the end, Wallie and EVE, with the help of some good robots and the humans, managed to place the plant in the ship's holo-detector, a device which will activate an automatic hyperjump to Earth once it scans the plant. And so, the spaceship went right back to Earth.

Back on earth, the humans discovered that the Earth was still in a very bad condition but the captain was very optimistic about it. They planted the plant on the ground as they venture through civilization again.

And that's the end of the movie.

Well, there was nothing so nice about this movie, in my opinion. It was just about 2 robots falling in love with each other and they can't talk much. Wallie could only say 'eeeeeeeeeeeee-va!' while EVE only knows 'directive' and 'wall-eeh!?'.

The meaning behind this story is more or less about keeping the Earth clean and saving the world from pollution, or else you'll end up like this. But 2 robots in love with each other? Hmm... I don't really see the relevance in it.

Apart from Wallie and EVE, another interesting robot in the movie would be M-O, which stands for Microbe Obliterator. It's one of the maintenance robots who cleans the filth in the ship and inspects incoming deliveries for foreign contaminants.

wall-e m-o

M-O was always following Wallie due to his dirty body. Its actions are so funny, especially the frustration it shows when it sees Wallie's trail marks on the floor.

Surprisingly WALL-E got an average of A- at Yahoo! Movies Critics Reviews but I don't know why. Many of my friends said it was nice too. But still, the movie was somewhat boring and I almost dozed off during the movie. Yes, the computer graphics and visualizations were great but the plot seemed rather plain. After all, there wasn't much excitement in the movie.

Perhaps a passionate robot love making session would be wonderful. Wallie would go: eva! EvA! EEEeeeVaa! Oh eevaa! *bizz* EEEVAA! EEEEVAAA! *BIZZZ* Millions of positive electrons from Wallie enters EVE through her reproductive port, heads to her one and only negative electron and *poof* baby WALLEVE!

Anyway, this is how I would summarize the movie: 2 lonely robots meet, fall in love, meet humans and they, with the humans, live happily ever after.

Noobie Rating: 4/10 (Everyone seem to love it, but I don't)
