Review: The Social Network

The Social Network is about a Harvard undergrad and computer programming genius, Mark Zuckerberg, creating the now famous social networking site - Facebook.

The movie started with Mark Zuckerbeg working on a new idea. Initially with Facemash, a site to compare 2 photo of girls and vote the hotter one, it explores the moment which ignited the Facebook legacy.

The film started from the halls of Harvard to the cubicles of Palo Alto to capture the early days of a culture-changing phenomenon and the way it both pulled a group of young revolutionaries together.

The main characters are Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg), the brilliant Harvard student who create websites, Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield), once Zuckerberg's close friend, who provided the initial money for Facebook, and Napster founder Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake).

the social network casts

Sean Parker brought Facebook to Silicon Valley's venture capitalists, which made them expand and continued its growth.

Not forgetting the Winklevoss twins (Armie Hammer and Josh Pence), the Harvard classmates who insisted that Zuckerberg stole their idea and sued him for ownership of it.

By the way, did you know that the twins are played by two different person? The twins are actually played by Armie Hammer and Josh Pence.

Overall, the storyline was pretty interesting. Despite the lack of actions and a lot of dialogues and conversations, the plot is attention-grabbing. It's probably due to the fact that it's about "Facebook" - one of the leading sites on the Internet! Who doesn't know about Facebook right?

Anyway, I personally think the best actor in The Social Network casts is Andrew Garfield, who played Eduardo Saverin. His expressions and personalities certainly made the movie more dramatic, since he initially funded Facebook and got betrayed later on.

According to the movie, it seems that there were lots of controversies throughout the period Facebook was at its early stages. Hence the sub-title "You Don't Get To 500 Million Friends Without Making a Few Enemies".

Even though the storyline is pretty true, The Social Network is adapted from Ben Mezrich's 2009 book "The Accidental Billionaires".

Review: The Other Guys

The Other Guys is about two mismatched New York City detectives seizing an opportunity to step up like the top cops whom they idolize. Only things don't quite go as planned.

the other guys movie poster

New York City Police Detectives Christopher Danson (Dwayne Johnson) and P. K. Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson) are the toughest and most famous cops with the best capture rate no matter what it takes.

the other guys highsmith and christopher

However, both of them died very early in the movie. Making way for Detective Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg) to take their chances to be one of the top cops.

They want their chance to make a big impact too. They get their chance when a small case falls into their lap which ends up being a very big case instead. Road chasing, kidnapping, shooting and dumb acts ensued.

Then out came Dr. Sheila (Eva Mendes), a very sexy lady and is Allen's wife, being one of the supportive casts in the movie. Apparently, Allen is a natural attraction for the hot chicks.

Overall, the movie is not as funny as what it seems. A typical storyline about cops wanting to shine and the inclusion of humors and jokes here and there.

The plot is pretty confusing as well, with too many bad guys around and not knowing what's happening when Allen and Terry tries to make an arrest. They always end up getting bullied.

And in the end, they manage to save the day. Pretty much expected.

Review: Megamind

Megamind about a supervillain who tries to conquer Metro City in every way.

megamind movie poster

Each attempt turns into a failure thanks to the caped superhero known as "Metro Man", a hero until the day Megamind actually kills him.

megamind metro

Metro Man's appearance was quite limited in the beginning of the movie. Audience might think it's another typical hero verses evil animation but it's not entirely that.

After killing off Metro Man early in the show, Megamind (Will Ferrell) is a supervillain without a superhero. He then decides to create a new hero opponent called "Tighten", who promises to be bigger, better and stronger than Metro Man.

megamind tighten

Tighten used to be a cameraman for the reporter Roxanne, who is believed to be Metro Man's love interest. But ever since Metro Man died, she felt hopeless and always depressed over the lost of Metro City.

Therefore, with the new powers Tighten possess - all thanks to Megamind - he thought he would be able to attract Roxanne's attention. So after the superhero training given by a disguised god-father by Megamind, the reporter-turned-almost-hero went straight for Roxanne.

Unfortunately, Roxanne wasn't interested and Tighten thinks it's more fun to be a villain than a hero. Tighten doesn't just want to rule the city, he wants to destroy it. He wants to take revenge.

On the day the Tighten hero should return to Metro City, Megamind went on a city rampage but Tighten didn't appear. But soon after that, Tighten fought with Megamind and the initial villain Megamind turned out to be an unlikely hero and saved Metro City from Tighten's evil wrath.

In the end, Megamind and Roxanne got together.

That's why Megamind not a typical one hero versus one villain movie. It has a twist that made things more interesting and fresh.

Overall, it was quite a fun movie. The inclusion of humor and jokes are visible every now and then. Megamind, together with Minion, are interesting characters that made the the storyline entertaining. Tighten, on the other hand, doesn't seem likely to be a true hero. Finally, Roxanne is not the typical damsel in distress.

Take note, it's not recommended to watch Megamind in 3D because the 3D effects are not worth watching. Don't waste your money.

Review: Takers

Takers is about a group of bank robbers find their robbery plan interrupted by two hard-boiled detectives.

takers movie poster

They continue to baffle police by pulling off perfectly executed bank robberies. They are in and out like clockwork, leaving no evidence behind and laying low in between heists. But when they attempt to pull off one last job with more money at stake than ever before, they find their plans interrupted by a detective who is insisting on solving the case.

takers takers

A seasoned team of bank robbers, including Gordon Jennings (Idris Elba), John Rahway (Paul Walker), A.J. (Hayden Christensen), and brothers Jake (Michael Ealy) and Jesse Attica (Chris Brown) successfully complete their latest heist and lead a life of luxury while planning their next job.

takers ghost

When Ghost (Tip T.I. Harris), a former member of their team, is released from prison he convinces the group to strike an armored car. As the "takers" carefully plan their strategy and draw nearer to exacting the grand heist, police officers Jack Welles (Matt Dillon) and Eddie Hatcher (Jay Hernandez) inches closer to apprehending the criminals.

takers police jack and eddie

Takers is a typical high-profile robbery but it's not as good as The Italian Job. As expected, the thieves execute a robbery and certain individuals will try to stop then.

Overall, it's just an okay movie. The storyline is predictable because loopholes are visible, especially the early release of Noami from rehabilitation - Gordon's sister. Also, the release of Ghost, who was caught in one of the previous heist, made things worse for the group.

And as expected (again), Ghost decided to betray the group by having his Russian "friends" break into the hotel room where they gathered after successfully executed the grand heist, and starts shooting at the group. A.J. died, and the rest ran for their lives. Jake and Jesse then went back home and got surrounded my the police, leaving them no choice but to face the police - with guns. Eventually, they died as well.

Meanwhile, Gordon and John chased after Ghost, who has decided to keep 100% of the share.

In the end, Ghost was killed and Gordon, John and Noami drove away into the unknown - the end. Somehow something's hanging right?

Noobie Rating: 5/10 (Just okay, nothing new)
