Review: The Green Hornet (2011)

The Green Hornet is Britt Reid (Seth Rogen), son of Los Angeles' most prominent and respected media magnate and perfectly happy to maintain a directionless life until his father (Tom Wilkinson) mysteriously dies, leaving Britt his vast media empire.

In an unlikely friendship with one of his father's employees, Kato (Jay Chou), they see the chance to do something more meaningful: fight crime.

Protecting the law by breaking it, Britt becomes the vigilante Green Hornet as he and Kato hit the streets. Using all his intelligence and skill, Kato builds the ultimate weaponry, The Black Beauty, an indestructible car with firepower and horsepower.

Fighting against bad guys and criminals, the Green Hornet and Kato made a name for themselves. And with the help of Britt's new Secretary Lenore Case (Cameron Diaz), they begin to hunt after the man behind LA's underworld: Benjamin Chudnofsky (Christoph Waltz). But Chudnofsky has his own plan: to eliminate the Green Hornet once and for all.

Alright, the Green Hornet is not a typical hero-fight-villains movie, it's much more interesting than I thought. There were scenes of both Britt and Kato falling in love with secretary Lenore, Kato with his computer-edited fighting skills, and more explosions and destruction - done by the Green Hornet and Kato!

Seth Rogen being the Green Hornet is definitely suitable, if the character of Britt Reid is meant to be funny and hilarious. I'm not sure of how the original Green Hornet is like, but after all - Seth is a funny man.

Jay Chou on the other hand, has good acting skills - however, his English wasn't accurate and sometimes he's just mumbling. If it wasn't because of the subtitles, I wouldn't have understood what he said most of the time. Besides that, he could be expressionless and emotionless at times.

Cameron Diaz is sort of old for a sexy secretary character. No doubt she still has the look and body, but a younger sexier lady would have suited the role better. She could be the Green Hornet's sidekick if she incorporate her Charlie's Angels kickass personality!

Christoph Waltz's Chudnofsky isn't that bad either. But he isn't a super villain, more of a aging gang leader who wants to knock off the Green Hornet but ended up calling himself Bloodnofsky, which represents the colour red, to match the Green Hornet's green colour. Pathetically hilarious.

Overall, the movie is an action comedy. There isn't much explanation to be discovered and the plot is straightforward - 2 men wants to get ride of a villain. The gadgets are cool, but obviously not as cool as 007's.

Noobie Rating: 6/10 (A fun movie to kill time)
